Four Year Strong successfully stick the landing on their complete sonic overhaul.
For a band that’s been plugging away since 2001, Four Year Strong have gathered quite an expansive catalogue of material, so an album comprised entirely of unreleased and unplugged songs isn’t the most far-fetched thing to come from one of the mainstays of modern pop punk.
What is far-fetched is that Four Year Strong almost completely succeeds in abandoning their sound altogether. The mostly acoustic fingerpicking is easy on the eardrums, and album highlight ‘Stuck In The Middle’ carries a bluesy folk swagger that’s hard to omit from memory when first listened to.
A cluster of the track listing does sound a bit samey, but for a record that’s branded as stripped down reinterpretations, this remains to be expected. While not technically a studio album, this project shows the pop punk quartet emanate a certain vulnerability that would otherwise be lost, and having tapped into a far more delicate side to their sound, is something that should carefully be considered towards future releases.
With a title as apt as Some Of You Will Like This, Some Of You Won’t, the Massachusetts four-piece have crafted some artful reimagining’s of their past work that not only proves to have legs of its own but maintains pleasant listening regardless. Fans of the bands previous work will undoubtedly find something to enjoy here but even if you don’t, you can’t say they didn’t warn you!
