American Nightmare is a hardcore punk band hailing from Boston, Massachusetts. Formed in 1998 they released their debut full-length Background Music in 2001 via Equal Vision Records which was met with critical acclaim. In 2003 they faced legal trouble with a similarly named band from Philadelphia, leading them to shorten their name to their initials 'A.N.' and then to American Nothing.
Shortly thereafter, the Philadelphia American Nightmare threatened legal action so the band changed their name again to Give Up The Ghost, which was going to be the title of the band's second album. Under their new name, they released their second album We're Down Til' We're Underground later that year to critical acclaim.
In June 2004, following the cancellation of an intended European tour the band announced their break up, citing "health and personal reasons" for their disbandment. Members would go on to join and form other bands such as Cold Cave, Some Girls, and The Hope Conspiracy among others.
After seven years of inactivity, the band reunited under the name American Nightmare and played a handful of reunion shows. Deathwish Inc. reissued both their albums Background Music and We're Down Til' We're Underground to coincide with their reunion. In February 2018, the band released their self-titled third studio album via Rise Records, their first new music in fifteen years.
