Mastodon - Leviathan (2004)
Mastodon's second full-length album is a powerhouse of riffs and screams that is sure to appeal to anyone with a head to bang. Inspired by Herman Melville's famous novel Moby Dick, Leviathan was named album of the year by Revolver, Terrorizer and Kerrang! and is frequently lauded as one of the best and most influential metal albums of the 21st century.
Neurosis should be a household name by now having been active since 1985, and with a whopping total of eleven studio albums under their belt. Their latest; Fires Within Fires is a further exploration of their trademark sound, combining post-metal tendencies with industrial, doom and punk.
Viet Cong - Viet Cong (2015)
Combining sounds of post-punk and noise rock, Viet Cong's debut full-length continues their droning ascent onto unsuspecting ears just as it did when it critics praised its release all the way back in 2015. Many considered Viet Cong's choice of name offensive, so the band has since gone on to perform and release under the name Preoccupations.
Chelsea Wolfe - Abyss (2015)
Chelsea Wolfe is an underground music fan's champion, combining her gothic lofi folk aesthetic with sprinklings of doom, heavy metal and industrial. Her fourth full-length album Abyss showcases all of this in spades, carefully curating a heavy music fans wet dream / worst nightmare; Abyss is an album that explores Wolfe's own experience with sleep paralysis.
If it wasn't because of their massive Coachella performance in 2017, the fact that they released five albums in that same year, or took home the ARIA for best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal album for Nonagon Infinity in 2016, suffice to say, King Gizzard has become a household name. Nonagon Infinity is a fan-favourite release, toying with the idea of infinite loops and neverending song structure.
The Sword - Warp Riders (2010)
Although their sound has since tilted towards a direction more reminiscent of hard rock, The Sword are genre heavyweights when it comes to the realms of stoner rock and doom metal. Their earlier records capitalize on the likes of this sound with their conceptual science-fiction album Warp Riders drenched in fuzzy riffs and dripping with Black Sabbath worship.
Swans - Filth (1983)
The Michael Gira fronted Swans is a behemoth of a band, having released 14 studio albums as well as numerous splits, EPs and live albums. Their debut Filth, while not publicly lauded during release has since gone on to be lauded as a classic album, the birth of Swans dark, droning post-punk roots as well as an influential record that is considered ahead of its time.
