Having moved on from Sydney experimental punk outfit Hellions last year, prolific songwriter Matthew Gravolin is ready to make his return with the debut of his solo project, Agnes Manners.
Agnes Manners is an impeccably crafted theatrical, melodic and expansive showcase of Gravolin’s musical vision, born from an intricate web of circumstance and artistic desire.
While performing and writing songs for heavier acts, a folder labelled ‘Manners’ on his computer bubbled away quietly with songs incongruent to their sonic centres. The collection of misfit songs grew alongside the success of Hellions – an ARIA Award nomination and Top 5 chart debut, a triple j Feature Album, and extensive touring throughout Australia, Europe, UK, and Asia saw the group rise to the top of Australia’s burgeoning punk and hardcore scene.
However, fueled by a deeply personal motivation, Gravolin departed Hellions in 2019 to turn his passive creation of juxtaposing sounds into active exploration.
“It wasn’t until my father passed suddenly in 2018 that I felt the need to focus on the new sound I felt building within me. A sound that dad would have liked.”
Sonically and lyrically, Agnes Manners champions vulnerability and empathy in men, arriving to dismantle what Gravolin describes as “the archaic blueprint of masculinity”, alongside the deconstruction of genre and its bounds. Embracing the androgynous nature of the music and words led him to the female moniker of
